Description

Military – Rota Spain Naval Station 60th Anniversary Halfway between anecdote and history

The book was written by a local resident of Rota, Spain,  Agustin R. de la Poza F.,  whose father served as an Engineer on the construction crew that built the naval base in the 1950’s.  This was the largest most strategic military project in Europe at that time.  The book contains numerous accounts from local politicians, residents, military personnel stationed on the base, and includes an account from an Astronaut that actually served in VQ-2.  (Chapter 11 “Rota from the sky”) The Rota naval base was home to VQ-2, the acclaimed Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron which played an important role during the cold war and more recently in U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The book gives an insight into the impact on the local residents, the influence the U.S. Military personnel had on the economy of Rota, Spain and the surrounding communities.  Each page, side by side, contains the Spanish and English translation.
This is a must have for anyone who is interested in Naval history or anyone that may have served in Rota or passed through on a temporary deployment, or simply interested in Spain and it’s culture.
The book was originally written and printed in Spain.  In 2015 the book was edited, reprinted and published in the USA by Ed Smith who served in VQ-2 in the ’60’s.
